“PDP’s Umar Bature Backs Wike’s Faction, Urges Unity Over Sanctions”

The National Organising Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Bature, has voiced strong support for the stance of the ‘Concerned Stakeholders’ group led by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. Bature affirmed that the group's position aligns with the official direction of the party, especially in the context of recent internal conflicts and calls for party discipline.

Speaking on the growing divisions within the party, Bature emphasized the need for unity, dialogue, and reconciliation, rather than punitive actions. He noted that while the party has been experiencing turbulence following the 2023 general elections and subsequent leadership disputes, a path of inclusivity and engagement is crucial for the PDP’s survival and future electoral success.

“There is no wisdom in expelling or suspending party members who have made mistakes. We must reconcile and build, not destroy,” Bature stated. “What the Wike-led group is advocating for is not outside the party’s constitution or against our collective interest. We must be strategic and focused.”

The ‘Concerned Stakeholders’ group, a faction within the PDP aligned with Wike, has been at the center of internal party wrangling, especially regarding issues of zoning, leadership appointments, and the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike and his allies have faced criticism for alleged anti-party activities during the 2023 election, including tacit support for rival candidates. However, Bature’s comments mark a significant endorsement of the group’s efforts to steer the party through dialogue rather than division.

Tensions within the PDP have recently escalated, with some party chieftains and state leaders calling for the suspension or expulsion of members believed to have worked against the party’s interests. However, Bature has urged restraint, arguing that focusing on blame will only deepen the cracks and push the party further from its goal of reclaiming power at the national level.

“This is not the time for witch-hunting. We need every loyal and capable hand on deck. Let us not forget, our strength lies in our diversity and ability to manage disagreements,” he said.

Observers say Bature’s comments reflect a broader strategy emerging among moderate voices in the PDP who favor political healing over confrontation. As the party positions itself for 2027, how it manages its internal disputes will likely determine its chances at national resurgence.

Despite the fractures, the PDP remains one of Nigeria’s major political forces. The coming months will reveal whether Bature’s call for reconciliation and alignment with the Wike-led faction can lead to a more united and competitive party.
