Federal Government Warns Airlines Against Bringing Passengers Without Valid Visas
Abuja, Nigeria – Friday, May 24, 2025 —
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to all international airlines operating in and out of the country, cautioning them against bringing in passengers who do not possess valid entry visas. The directive, which was issued on Friday, emphasizes strict compliance with Nigeria’s immigration laws and makes it clear that any airline found guilty of violating this policy will face severe penalties.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, the government expressed concern over a growing number of incidents where foreign travelers arrive in Nigeria without appropriate travel documentation, including valid visas. The statement stressed that this trend poses a threat to national security and undermines the integrity of the country’s immigration system.
According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, “Airlines have a responsibility to verify the travel documents of all passengers before boarding. Any carrier that transports passengers without valid visas into Nigeria will be held accountable and sanctioned accordingly.”
He further noted that immigration officials have been directed to step up checks and enforce stricter scrutiny at all ports of entry. Airlines found culpable will not only be fined but may also face suspension or blacklisting depending on the severity and frequency of the violations.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have been instructed to work closely with airline operators to ensure compliance and to avoid disruptions that may arise from the denial of entry to improperly documented travelers.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and maintaining international standards in immigration control. Passengers are also advised to ensure they meet all travel requirements before embarking on any journey to Nigeria.
This directive serves as a reminder to airline operators that they are key stakeholders in the national security ecosystem and must uphold their responsibilities in accordance with international aviation and immigration laws.
