President Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers State, Suspends Governor and Lawmakers
President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to ongoing political tensions between the governor and state lawmakers. As part of this decision, he has suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the State House of Assembly for six months.
In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, the President explained that the suspension aims to restore stability in the oil-rich state. To oversee governance during this period, he has appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state's administrator.
"This declaration does not affect the judiciary, which will continue to function as mandated by the Constitution," Tinubu stated.
Citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, the President emphasized that the emergency measure was necessary to maintain peace. The proclamation has been officially published in the Federal Gazette and sent to the National Assembly for approval.
"It is my hope that this intervention will restore peace and order in Rivers State and remind all political stakeholders of their constitutional responsibilities," Tinubu concluded.
