A group of opposition lawmakers has accused lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of trying to disrupt the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State.
At a press conference in Abuja, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP – Imo State) said these lawmakers were making illegal moves to stop the elections and block the implementation of the 2025 Rivers State budget, despite a Supreme Court ruling.
According to him, the pro-Wike lawmakers want to change the Local Government Administration Law so that former local government chairmen—whose tenure has ended—can return to office instead of allowing new elections.
“They don’t want the election to happen because they want the former LGA chairmen to continue in office. But we assure Rivers people that the election will go on as planned, and no illegal law change will stop it,” Ugochinyere said.
He also claimed that the lawmakers were trying to get a court order to stop the elections, just as they had used legal tricks in the past to interfere with democracy in the state.

Additionally, he accused them of deliberately avoiding the 2025 budget presentation to frustrate the government’s activities.
“The Governor invited the House of Assembly members for a meeting, something Wike himself would never have done. But they refused to attend. He even called the Speaker several times, but he didn’t pick up. Their real plan is to create chaos and make Rivers people suffer,” he said.
Despite these issues, Ugochinyere praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for staying calm and obeying the Supreme Court’s ruling. He said the Governor had tried to cooperate with the lawmakers and keep governance running despite their actions.
He also accused Wike of trying to control Rivers State at all costs instead of focusing on peace and development.
“Wike doesn’t care about peace or progress; he only wants control. Since he is no longer in charge, he wants nothing to move forward. Every problem—from the local government elections to the Assembly crisis—is part of his plan to hold the state hostage,” Ugochinyere alleged.

The lawmakers warned that the people of Rivers State would resist any attempt to undermine democracy. They urged Nigerians to stay alert and defend democracy.
“We are close to the end of this crisis, and that’s why Wike’s camp is getting more frustrated. But the people of Rivers are standing up. Our party leaders, governors, and National Working Committee members are working hard to put an end to this problem. We will not allow Rivers State to be destabilized,” they said.
Finally, they reaffirmed their support for Governor Fubara and called on the opposition to follow the rule of law instead of using illegal tactics.
