NCSCN Calls for Independent Truth and Reconciliation Committee in Rivers State

The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish an independent Truth and Reconciliation Committee to address the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

In a statement, the NCSCN emphasized the need for a neutral body to mediate conflicts, promote dialogue, and restore peace in the state. The council believes that an independent committee will help uncover the root causes of the crisis, foster unity among political stakeholders, and ensure lasting stability.

The political situation in Rivers State has raised concerns about governance, security, and development. The NCSCN stressed that resolving these issues through peaceful means is crucial for the well-being of the state and its people.

The council also called on all parties involved to cooperate with the proposed committee and prioritize the interests of the citizens above political differences.

The NCSCN highlighted that political conflicts, if left unresolved, could lead to instability, hinder economic growth, and negatively impact governance. Therefore, establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Committee would serve as a platform for dialogue, truth-telling, and conflict resolution.

The council further urged President Tinubu to ensure that the committee operates independently, free from political influence, and is composed of credible individuals, including legal experts, civil society representatives, and respected community leaders. This, they believe, will enhance public trust in the reconciliation process and encourage all parties to participate in good faith.

Additionally, the NCSCN called on security agencies to maintain neutrality and uphold the rule of law while addressing any security challenges arising from the crisis. It also appealed to political actors to embrace peaceful engagement and prioritize the welfare of the people of Rivers State.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and national unity. It expressed hope that with sincere efforts from all stakeholders, the political crisis in Rivers State would be resolved, paving the way for sustainable peace and development.
