SERAP advocates withholding allocations to states failing to conduct free and fair local council elections, in letter to Tinubu
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take action against states that have not held credible local government elections. SERAP specifically urged the President to instruct the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Olawale Edun, to suspend federal allocations to these states until they comply.
SERAP emphasizes the importance of democratic accountability and transparency in the distribution of funds. The organization believes that only democratically elected local government councils should receive allocations from the Federation Account, not any other entities.
In its statement, SERAP asked Tinubu to direct Mr. Edun to "immediately withhold federal allocations to states that have failed or refused to conduct credible local government elections and to ensure that any funds from the Federation Account are allocated solely to democratically elected local government councils, and not to any other body or institution."
